The 1996 Mazda Protege 4-cylinder 1.5-liter engine has two oxygen sensors: one located in the exhaust manifold and one in the catalytic converter.
Exhaust Manifold Oxygen Sensor
- The oxygen sensor in the exhaust manifold is located on the rear side of the engine, just below the cylinder head.
- It is screwed into the exhaust manifold, just below the catalytic converter.
- You will need a wrench or socket to remove the oxygen sensor from the exhaust manifold.
Catalytic Converter Oxygen Sensor
- The oxygen sensor in the catalytic converter is located on the bottom side of the catalytic converter.
- It is screwed into the catalytic converter, just after the exhaust manifold oxygen sensor.
- You will need to jack up the car and remove the skid plate to access the oxygen sensor in the catalytic converter.
