A fuel filter is an important part of your vehicle's fuel system. It helps to keep dirt, debris, and water from entering your fuel injector, which can cause damage to your engine. Changing a fuel filter is a relatively simple task that can be completed in about 15 minutes. Follow these steps to replace the fuel filter in a 1999 Dodge Durango.
Tools and Materials you'll need:
- New fuel filter
- Fuel line wrench
- Screwdriver
- Pliers
- Rags
- Safety glasses
Instructions:
1. Locate the fuel filter. On the 1999 Dodge Durango, the fuel filter is located under the vehicle, just in front of the fuel tank.
2. Prepare the car. Place a rag underneath the fuel filter to catch any drips of fuel. Wear safety glasses to protect your eyes.
3. Remove the fuel lines. Use a fuel line wrench to loosen and remove the two fuel lines that are connected to the fuel filter. The lines are: a fuel pressure line and a fuel return line. Be careful not to lose the rubber gaskets that are on the ends of the fuel lines.
4. Remove the old fuel filter. Use a screwdriver to remove the two screws that hold the fuel filter in place. Then, pull the fuel filter out of the bracket.
5. Install the new fuel filter. Insert the new fuel filter into the bracket and secure it with the two screws. Then, reconnect the two fuel lines.
6. Start the engine. Check for fuel leaks around the fuel lines. If there are any leaks, tighten the fuel line connections until the leaks stop.
7. Check the fuel pressure. To check fuel pressure, you will need a fuel pressure gauge. Connect the fuel pressure gauge to the fuel pressure line and turn the key to the "On" position. The fuel pressure should be between 40 and 60 psi.
8. Reassemble the components. Reinstall the underbody cover, and reconnect the negative battery cable. Start the engine and check for leaks.
