Locate the timing marks. The timing marks on the Ranger engine are located on the crankshaft pulley and the camshaft gear. The crankshaft pulley is located at the bottom of the engine, near the oil pan. The camshaft gear is located at the top of the engine, just above the valve cover.
Align the timing marks. The timing marks on the crankshaft pulley and camshaft gear should be aligned with each other. If they are not aligned, you can turn the crankshaft pulley or camshaft gear to align them.
Install the timing belt. Once the timing marks are aligned, you can install the timing belt. Wrap the timing belt around the crankshaft pulley, the camshaft gear, and the idler pulley. Make sure that the timing belt is seated properly on all of the pulleys.
Tension the timing belt. After the timing belt is installed, you need to tension it. Use a tension gauge to measure the tension of the timing belt. The tension should be between 40 and 50 pounds.
Secure the timing belt cover. Once the timing belt is tensioned, you need to secure the timing belt cover. Install the screws or bolts that hold the timing belt cover in place.
Check the timing. After you've installed the timing belt, check the timing to make sure it's correct. Turn the crankshaft pulley clockwise until the timing marks on the crankshaft pulley and the camshaft gear line up. If the timing marks are aligned, the timing is correct.
Start the engine. Once you've checked the timing, you can start the engine. The engine should run smoothly and without any unusual noises.
