Tools and Materials Needed:
- Replacement EGR valve
- Socket set
- Ratchet
- Pliers
- Flat head screwdriver
- Gasket scraper
Procedure:
1. Disconnect the battery. This is important to prevent electrical shock while working on the engine.
2. Locate the EGR valve. It is typically mounted on the intake manifold. On the 1987 LeBaron 2.2L turbo engine, the EGR valve is located on the passenger side of the engine, near the firewall.
3. Disconnect the vacuum lines that are connected to the EGR valve. Use pliers to carefully remove the vacuum lines. Be careful not to damage the vacuum lines.
4. Remove the electrical connector from the EGR valve. Use a flat head screwdriver to pry the connector off the valve.
5. Remove the bolts that hold the EGR valve in place. Use a socket set and ratchet to remove the bolts.
6. Remove the old EGR valve from the intake manifold. Be careful not to drop the gasket that is between the valve and the manifold.
7. Clean the gasket surface on the intake manifold. Use a gasket scraper to remove any old gasket material.
8. Install a new gasket between the EGR valve and the intake manifold. Make sure the gasket is properly seated.
9. Reinstall the EGR valve and tighten the bolts.
10. Reinstall the vacuum lines and electrical connector.
11. Reconnect the battery.
Start the engine and check for proper operation of the EGR valve. The EGR valve should open and close when the engine is running at idle and off idle. If the EGR valve is not working properly, you may need to have it replaced.
