1. Set the multimeter to the voltage setting.

3. Connect the negative lead of the multimeter to the negative terminal of the battery.
4. Start the car.
5. The multimeter should read around 14 volts. If it does, the alternator is working properly.
6. If the multimeter reads less than 14 volts, the alternator may not be working properly. You can further test the alternator by following these steps:
1. Turn off the car.
2. Disconnect the positive lead from the battery.
3. Connect the jumper wire from the negative terminal of the battery to the positive terminal of the alternator.
4. Turn on the car.
5. The alternator should start charging the battery. The multimeter will read around 14 volts. If it does, the alternator is working properly.
6. If the alternator doesn't start charging the battery, the alternator may need to be replaced.
