* Fuel injection pump timing light
* Socket wrench set
* Flat-blade screwdriver
* Allen wrench set
* Dial indicator
Step 2: Prepare the engine.
1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Remove the air cleaner cover.
3. Remove the valve covers.
4. Rotate the engine until the No. 1 piston is at top dead center (TDC).
5. Turn off the ignition and reconnect the negative battery cable.
Step 3: Install the fuel injection pump timing light.
1. Remove the fuel injection pump inspection plug.
2. Install the fuel injection pump timing light in the inspection plug hole.
3. Tighten the timing light until it is snug.
Step 4: Adjust the fuel pump timing.
1. Start the engine and let it warm up to operating temperature.
2. Shine the timing light on the fuel injection pump timing marks.
3. Loosen the fuel injection pump locknut.
4. Turn the fuel injection pump until the timing marks are aligned.
5. Tighten the fuel injection pump locknut.
Step 5: Test the fuel pump timing.
1. Turn off the engine and disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Remove the fuel injection pump timing light.
3. Reinstall the fuel injection pump inspection plug.
4. Reconnect the negative battery cable.
5. Start the engine and let it run for a few minutes.
6. Check for any signs of engine knock or ping.
If the engine is running smoothly, the fuel pump timing is correct.
