1) Release the parking brake:
- Depress the brake pedal.
- Pull up on the parking brake lever and push the release button.
- You should hear a clicking sound as the parking brake is disengaged.
- The parking brake light on the dashboard should turn off.
2) If you can't disengage the parking brake
- Inspect the brake pedal switch. If the brake pedal switch is faulty it will not recognize that the brake is pressed and therefore the parking brake light will stay on.
- Check brake fluid level. If the fluid is low, the light may stay on.
- Check the parking brake cable. If the cable is stretched it will not be able to fully disengage the parking brake and the light will remain on.
If these solutions do not fix the problem, you should take your car to a mechanic.
