Industry - Steam is applied directly in many industries by providing motive power for pumps and air compressors, or through steam turbines coupled to generators that provide electricity. These use steam to press papers and fabrics, treat materials, disinfect and sterilize equipment and products, etc.
Agriculture - Steam was used in the early steam engines that powered tractors and other farm machines, and for other farm uses.
Transportation - Steam power was dominant in shipping and overland rail transportation until the end of the 18th and mid 19th century, respectively, and on into the 20th century for certain applications.
Medicine - For disinfecting and sterilizing equipment; the first autoclaves were steam-powered.
Cooking - Steamers or steamers are kitchen utensils that cook the food by steaming. Steam kettles provide high humidity by steaming water to keep foods hot and moist.
