1. Timing belt kit (including timing belt, tensioner pulley, and idler pulley)
2. Socket wrench set
3. Torque wrench
4. Flat-head screwdriver
5. Pliers
Instructions:
1. Park your Isuzu Trooper on a level surface, and engage the parking brake.
2. Open the hood and locate the timing belt cover. It is located on the front of the engine, just below the valve covers.
3. Remove the timing belt cover. There are four bolts holding the timing belt cover in place, two on top and two on the bottom. Use a socket wrench to remove these bolts.
4. Locate the crankshaft timing mark and the camshaft timing marks. The crankshaft timing mark is a small notch located on the crankshaft pulley, just below the water pump. The camshaft timing marks are two small notches located on the camshaft sprockets, one for each cylinder bank.
5. Align the timing marks. Rotate the crankshaft pulley clockwise until the crankshaft timing mark aligns with the "0" mark on the timing belt cover. Next, rotate the camshaft sprockets counterclockwise until the camshaft timing marks align with the "0" marks on the timing belt cover.
6. Install the timing belt. Start by wrapping the timing belt around the crankshaft pulley. Make sure that the timing belt is seated properly in the grooves of the pulley. Next, wrap the timing belt around the idler pulley. Then, wrap the timing belt around the tensioner pulley. Finally, wrap the timing belt around the camshaft sprockets. Make sure that the timing belt is seated properly in the grooves of all the pulleys and sprockets.
7. Tension the timing belt. Use a flat-head screwdriver to pry up on the tensioner pulley. This will tension the timing belt. Tighten the tensioner pulley bolt to 19 ft-lbs.
8. Reinstall the timing belt cover and start the engine. Make sure that the timing belt is properly aligned before starting the engine. If the timing belt is not aligned properly, it could damage the engine.
