Tools and materials needed:
- Spark plugs (8)
- Spark plug socket
- Ratchet and extension
- Gapping tool (optional)
- Compressed air (optional)
1. Locate the spark plugs.
- They are located on the top of the engine and can be accessed by removing the engine cover.
2. Remove the ignition coils.
- There is one coil per spark plug. To remove a coil, use a ratchet and socket to loosen the bolt holding the coil in place, then pull up on the coil to remove it.
3. Check the spark plugs for wear.
- Look for signs of erosion, cracking, or fouling. If the spark plugs are excessively worn, they should be replaced.
4. Measure the spark plug gap.
- The correct gap is 0.050 - 0.060 inches. If the gap is too wide or too narrow, use the gapping tool to adjust it.
5. Screw the new spark plugs into place.
- Hand-tighten the spark plugs, then use the ratchet and socket to tighten them until snug. Do not overtighten the spark plugs.
6. Re-install the ignition coils.
- Push down on the coils until they click into place.
7. Reinstall the engine cover.
Tips:
- Use compressed air to blow any debris out of the engine before installing the new spark plugs.
- If you have difficulty removing the ignition coils, try using a penetrating oil to loosen the bolts.
- Be careful not to drop the spark plugs into the engine.
- Change the spark plugs according to the recommended maintenance schedule for your vehicle.
