How to Change Transmission Fluid and Filter

1992 Ford Thunderbird

Tools and Materials Needed:

- New transmission fluid (check your owner's manual for the recommended type and amount)

- New transmission filter

- Oil drain pan

- Funnel

- Wrench

- Rags

Instructions:

1. Prepare the vehicle.

Park the vehicle on a level surface. Turn off the engine and allow it to cool down. Engage the parking brake.

2. Locate the transmission drain plug.

The transmission drain plug is usually located on the bottom of the transmission pan. It is typically a 17mm bolt.

3. Place the oil drain pan under the transmission drain plug.

Position the oil drain pan directly beneath the transmission drain plug. Make sure the pan is large enough to catch all of the fluid that will drain out.

4. Loosen the transmission drain plug.

Use the wrench to loosen the transmission drain plug. Be careful not to drop the bolt into the oil drain pan.

5. Allow the fluid to drain.

Allow all of the fluid to drain out of the transmission. This may take several minutes.

6. Replace the transmission drain plug.

Once all of the fluid has drained out, replace the transmission drain plug. Tighten the plug securely.

7. Remove the transmission filter.

The transmission filter is usually located on the side of the transmission. It is held in place by a few bolts.

8. Remove the bolts and pull out the filter.

Remove the bolts that hold the transmission filter in place. Make sure you have a rag handy to catch any spills.

9. Install the new filter.

Slide the new filter into place and secure it with the bolts you removed earlier. Tighten the bolts securely.

10. Refill the transmission with fluid.

Use the funnel to add new transmission fluid to the transmission. Add the amount of fluid specified in your owner's manual.

11. Check the fluid level.

Use the dipstick to check the transmission fluid level. The fluid level should be between the "full" and "add" marks on the dipstick.

12. Start the vehicle and let it run for a few minutes.

Start the vehicle and let it run for a few minutes. This will circulate the new transmission fluid throughout the transmission.

13. Check for leaks.

Look under the vehicle for any leaks. If you see any leaks, tighten the transmission drain plug or filter bolts until the leak stops.

Tips:

- Be sure to use the correct type of transmission fluid for your vehicle. Using the wrong type of fluid can damage your transmission.
