What is the procedures for paralleling alternators or generators?

Step 1: Matching

The voltage frequency and phase sequence must be matched. The voltage tolerance must be checked with the voltmeter's frequency adjustment and phase sequence checks

Step 2: Paralleling

Close the line circuit breaker before closing the generator circuit breaker of G2 first, then close the generator circuit breaker of G1.

Step 3: Adjustment of Loads

When the two alternators are synchronized load should be adjusted, then the load on the machine whose governor is less sensitive should be reduce d in order to share an additional load.

Step 4: Synchronization

Adjust the prime moves of G1 and G2 until the frequency differences between them become almost zero with the help of the synchronous scope.

Step 5: Closing G1

Close the main switch or circuit of the generator G1 while its prime mover is still driving the generator. Adjust field rheostat of G1 to get the desired load sharing.

Note

For proper paralleling, the frequency, voltage and phase sequence must be the same and in parallel.
