Can power steering fluid be used in place of brake fluid?

No, power steering fluid should never be used in place of brake fluid. Although they might look somewhat alike and the difference doesn’t seem obvious at first glance, power steering fluid and brake fluid are two completely different automotive fluids with different properties and different functions.

Power steering fluid acts exclusively in cars’ hydraulic power steering systems. It transfers mechanical movement into hydraulic pressure, ensuring smooth and effortless steering. The fluid’s main purpose is to lubricate and protect internal parts of the steering mechanism. It prevents excessive friction and wear, helps power the system’s hydraulic pump and protects against corrosion and oxidation of system components.

Brake fluid goes in braking systems only, where it acts as a hydraulic medium for braking force transmission. When pressing the brake pedal, the master cylinder converts mechanical movement into hydraulic pressure and passes it down the brake lines. Brake calipers turn this pressure into mechanical force that squeezes brake pads against brake discs, slowing down or stopping the wheels.

There are a number of reasons why you should never substitute brake fluid with power steering fluid, including:

1. Different composition: power steering fluid is mineral-based, while brake fluid is glycol-based. They use different additives and have different properties.

2. Different boiling points: power steering fluid has a boiling point of around 200 degrees Celsius, while brake fluid has a boiling point of around 260 degrees Celsius. If the fluid in the brake system boils, it can cause a loss of braking power.

3. Different viscosities: power steering fluid and brake fluid have different viscosities. Viscosity is the resistance of a fluid to flow, and it affects the performance of the hydraulic system. Using power steering fluid in the brake system can cause the brakes to feel spongy and unresponsive.

4. Different compatibility: power steering fluid can damage the seals in the brake system, leading to leaks.

Using the wrong fluid can cause serious damage to your vehicle's braking system, potentially resulting in a loss of braking power and increased stopping distances, posing a significant safety hazard. Always ensure you use the fluids recommended by your vehicle manufacturer.
