Procedure:
1. Park your vehicle in a safe location. Turn off the engine and allow it to cool down. Engage the parking brake and chock the wheels if you are working on a hill.
2. Pop open your hood. Locate the ignition coils. They are four cylindrical-shaped components on top of the engine, each connected to a spark plug.
3. Disconnect the ignition coil connectors. Press down on the tab on the connector, then pull straight up.
4. Slide the spark plug wire boot of the ignition coil off the spark plug. Gently grasp the boot and twist as you pull straight up.
5. Use a spark plug socket with an extension to loosen and remove the old spark plugs. Be careful not to drop the spark plugs into the engine.
6. Check the condition of the old spark plugs. Look for signs of wear, such as erosion or buildup on the electrodes.
7. Apply anti-seize lubricant to the threads of the new spark plugs. This will help prevent the spark plugs from seizing in the engine.
8. Gap the new spark plugs to the specified gap. The gap is the distance between the center electrode and the ground electrode. The correct gap can be found in your owner's manual.
9. Gently thread the new spark plugs into the engine by hand. Do not use a wrench or socket.
10. Tighten the spark plugs with a spark plug socket and wrench. Tighten until snug. Do not overtighten.
11. Reattach the spark wires. If the wires are not securely attached, they could come loose and cause the engine to misfire.
12. Reattach the ignition coil connectors. Press down until they click into place.
13. Start the engine. If necessary, clear any engine codes that were set during the plug replacement.
Tips:
- Be sure to use the correct spark plugs for your vehicle. The wrong spark plugs can damage your engine.
- Avoid overtightening the spark plugs. This can damage the spark plugs and the engine.
- If you have any doubts about your ability to change the spark plugs, consult a qualified mechanic.
