Does excessive oil in engine harm engine?

Excessive oil in an engine can indeed be harmful and cause several problems:

1. Oil Dilution: Too much oil in the engine can lead to oil dilution, where fuel seeps into the oil. This dilutes the lubricating properties of the oil, compromising its ability to effectively protect engine components. This can accelerate wear and tear and increase the risk of engine damage.

2. Increased Oil Pressure: Excessive oil can cause higher oil pressure than the engine is designed to handle. High oil pressure can put extra strain on gaskets, seals, and other components, potentially leading to leaks or even catastrophic failures.

3. Air Entrapment: Too much oil can potentially trap air bubbles as it circulates in the engine, causing foaming and aeration. Air pockets can reduce the oil's ability to carry heat away from critical engine components. This can result in localized overheating and increase wear on pistons, bearings, and other parts.

4. Over-Revving and Bearing Damage: When the oil level is too high, the spinning crankshaft begins to whip the excess oil. This creates increased resistance known as windage that places heavy strain on the main bearings that support the crankshaft. Excessive windage can cause increased temperatures in the bearings, premature wear, bearing failure, and ultimately, engine damage.

5. Oil Leaking: Too much oil creates more pressure, increasing the tendency for leaks through gaskets, seals, and valve covers. Over time, persistent oil leaks can cause oil loss and potential damage to other components.

6. Oxygen Sensor Damage: In some cases, excessive oil can enter the combustion chamber, contaminate the oxygen sensor, and affect its ability to send accurate readings to the engine control unit (ECU). As a result, the engine's air-fuel mixture may become improperly adjusted, resulting in poor performance and reduced fuel efficiency.
