The first car to use an internal combustion engine was invented by Karl Benz in 1885. The car, called the Benz Patent-Motorwagen, was a three-wheeled vehicle with a single-cylinder, four-stroke engine. The engine produced a maximum of 0.75 horsepower and could propel the car to a top speed of 16 kilometers per hour (10 miles per hour).
