5 hp Briggs stratton engine will not start Tank has been cleaned carb and rebuilt valves sticking any other ideas?

Here are some additional things you can check to troubleshoot a Briggs & Stratton 5 HP engine:

1. Check the fuel system:

- Make sure the fuel tank is properly vented.

- Check that the fuel line is not kinked or damaged.

- Verify that the fuel filter is clean and free of debris.

- Ensure the carburetor is properly adjusted.

2. Check the spark plug:

- Remove the spark plug and check the gap. The gap should be between 0.030" and 0.035".

- Inspect the spark plug for damage or wear. If damaged, replace it.

- Check for spark by holding the spark plug near the cylinder head and pulling the starter cord. A good spark will jump a gap of about 1/8 inch.

3. Check the flywheel key:

- The flywheel key is a small piece of metal that connects the flywheel to the crankshaft. If the flywheel key is damaged or missing, the engine will not start.

- Inspect the flywheel key for damage or wear. If damaged, replace it.

4. Check the starter rope:

- The starter rope is used to pull the engine over to start it. If the starter rope is frayed or damaged, the engine will not start.

- Inspect the starter rope for damage or wear. If damaged, replace it.

5. Check the compression:

- Compression is the pressure created in the cylinder when the piston moves upwards during compression. If the compression is too low, the engine will not start.

- To check the compression, remove the spark plug and insert a compression tester into the cylinder. Pull the starter cord and check the reading. The compression should be between 80 and 120 psi.

If you have checked all of these things and the engine still does not start, it is best to take it to a qualified mechanic for further diagnosis and repair.
