Tools and materials needed:
- New transmission fluid (check owner's manual for recommended type and amount)
- Drain pan
- Funnel
- Wrench
- Rags
Instructions:
1. Park your vehicle on a level surface and engage the parking brake.
2. Crawl underneath the vehicle and locate the transmission drain plug. It is usually a 17mm bolt located on the bottom of the transmission pan.
3. Place the drain pan under the drain plug to catch the old transmission fluid.
4. Use the wrench to loosen and remove the drain plug. Be careful as the old fluid may be hot.
5. Allow all the old transmission fluid to drain out into the drain pan. This may take a few minutes.
6. Once all the old fluid has drained out, replace the drain plug and tighten it securely.
7. Locate the transmission fill plug. It is usually a 17mm bolt located on the side of the transmission.
8. Remove the fill plug and insert the funnel into the fill hole.
9. Add the new transmission fluid to the transmission. Refer to the owner's manual for the correct amount.
10. Replace the fill plug and tighten it securely.
11. Start the vehicle and let it run for a few minutes. This will circulate the new transmission fluid throughout the system.
12. Check the transmission fluid level with the dipstick and add more fluid if necessary.
Your 2002 Ford Explorer's transmission fluid has now been changed.
