1. Remove the valve cover and spark plugs.
2. Turn the crankshaft until the piston is at top dead center (TDC) of the compression stroke. This can be done by inserting a rod or stick into the spark plug hole and turning the crankshaft until the rod stops moving up.
3. Loosen the cam chain tensioner bolt and remove the tensioner.
4. Install the new tensioner and tighten the bolt to the specified torque.
5. Reinstall the valve cover and spark plugs.
6. Start the engine and check the timing. The timing can be checked by using a timing light. The light should flash when the piston is at TDC of the compression stroke.
If the timing is not correct, repeat steps 2-6 until the timing is correct.
Here are some additional tips for adjusting the timing chain on a 1996 Yamaha quad 400 Kodiak:
* Make sure that the crankshaft is turned in the correct direction. If the crankshaft is turned in the wrong direction, the timing chain will be damaged.
* Be careful not to overtighten the cam chain tensioner bolt. Overtightening the bolt can damage the cam chain tensioner.
* If the timing chain is worn or damaged, it will need to be replaced.
