How many feet away should you turn off your high beams if a car is coming?
There is no specific federal rule regarding how far away from an oncoming vehicle you must turn off your high beams. Some states, however, have specific statutes on the matter. For example, California states that "Whenever the driver of a vehicle approaches an oncoming vehicle within 500 feet" the driver should have switched to low beams. Always be sure to switch as soon as it can be done safely as to not disturb the vision of incoming drivers.
