How to Remove, Clean, and Replace an EGR Valve on a 1989 Ford Ranger 4x4 2.9 Liter V-6

Tools and Materials Needed:

- 10mm socket

- 12mm socket

- Ratchet

- Flat head screwdriver

- Intake cleaner

- Shop towels

- New EGR valve

Instructions:

1. Disconnect the battery.

- This is important to do any time you are working on the electrical system of your vehicle.

2. Locate the EGR valve.

- The EGR valve is located on the passenger side of the engine, near the top.

3. Disconnect the vacuum hoses from the EGR valve.

- There will be two vacuum hoses connected to the EGR valve. Use a flat head screwdriver to pry off the vacuum hoses.

4. Remove the EGR valve from the engine.

- There will be two 10mm bolts that hold the EGR valve to the engine. Use your 10mm socket and ratchet to remove the bolts.

5. Remove the gasket from the EGR valve.

- There will be a gasket between the EGR valve and the engine. Use a flat head screwdriver to pry off the gasket.

6. Clean the EGR valve and the gasket.

- Use intake cleaner and shop towels to clean the EGR valve and the gasket. Make sure to remove all of the carbon deposits.

7. Install the new gasket on the EGR valve.

- Make sure that the new gasket is properly seated on the EGR valve.

8. Install the EGR valve to the engine.

- Use the two 10mm bolts that you removed in Step 4 to install the EGR valve to the engine.

9. Connect the vacuum hoses to the EGR valve.

- Connect the two vacuum hoses that you disconnected in Step 3 to the EGR valve.

10. Reconnect the battery.

- Once everything is installed, reconnect the battery.
