How do you set timing on 7.3 Diesel pump before installation?

To set the timing on a 7.3 Power Stroke diesel pump before installation, follow these steps:

1. Gather the necessary tools and parts, including a dial indicator, a magnetic base, a crankshaft nut, and a timing pin.

2. Prepare the engine by removing the valve covers and locating the top dead center (TDC) of the number one cylinder. This can be done by inserting the timing pin into the injection pump hole until it bottoms out.

3. Set the dial indicator to zero.

4. Mount the magnetic base on the engine block near the injection pump.

5. Position the tip of the dial indicator so that it contacts the injection pump plunger.

6. Rotate the crankshaft until the injection pump plunger is at the highest point of its travel. This is indicated by the dial indicator reading of zero.

7. Loosen the injection pump mounting bolts and rotate the pump body until the timing mark on the pump aligns with the timing mark on the engine block.

8. Tighten the injection pump mounting bolts.

9. Replace the valve covers and reinstall the crankshaft nut.

10. Start the engine and check for proper timing by observing the engine's operation and listening for any unusual noises.

Note: It is important to ensure that the injection pump timing is set accurately. If the timing is incorrect, it can cause engine damage. If you are not confident in your ability to perform this procedure, it is recommended that you have a qualified mechanic set the timing for you.
