- Timing light
- Socket wrench
- Flat-head screwdriver
- 3/8-inch wrench
1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Locate the timing mark on the harmonic balancer. It is usually a small notch or line.
3. Find the timing mark on the timing cover. It is usually a small dot or arrow.
4. align the timing marks. If they are not aligned, you will need to adjust the distributor.
5. To adjust the distributor, loosen the distributor hold-down bolt with the 3/8-inch wrench.
6. Turn the distributor until the timing marks align.
7. Tighten the distributor hold-down bolt.
8. Start the engine and check the timing with the timing light.
9. The engine should be idling smoothly and the timing mark should be aligned with the mark on the timing cover.
10. If the timing is not correct, repeat steps 5-8.
