1. Prepare the Wheel Hub:
- Remove the wheel from the hub assembly.
- Clean the wheel hub surface and mating surfaces of the drum to ensure proper contact.
2. Inspect Brake Shoes:
- If you're replacing the brake drum, inspect the brake shoes for wear and cracks. Replace them if necessary.
3. Wheel Cylinder Condition:
- Inspect the wheel cylinder for any signs of leakage. Replace it if there's any damage.
4. Install Brake Drum:
- Place the brake drum onto the wheel hub. Make sure the drum's opening is facing the back of the vehicle.
- Install the wheel lug nuts or bolts temporarily to hold the drum in place.
5. Center the Brake Drum:
- Measure the distance between the outer edge of the brake drum and the mounting flange on the wheel hub.
- Measure from various points around the drum and adjust the drum's position until these distances are equal.
- Once centered, tighten the lug nuts or bolts to secure the drum.
6. Reattach the Wheel:
- Reinstall the wheel onto the hub.
- Tighten the lug nuts or bolts in a star pattern to evenly distribute the clamping force.
7. Test the Brakes:
- Once the wheel is installed, pump the brake pedal several times to center the brake shoes within the drum.
- Check for any unusual noises, vibrations, or brake dragging while driving.
Remember that proper installation of brake components is essential for safety. If you're unsure about any steps or encounter any issues, refer to the Freightliner service manual specific to your vehicle model for detailed guidance.
