- Turn your car's key to the "On" position, but don't start it.
Step 2 - Quickly Press the Gas Pedal
- Press the gas pedal down and release it four times in rapid succession within five seconds.
Step 3 - Watch the Check Engine Light
- The check engine light will flash a series of codes.
- Each code will be represented by a series of short flashes (the tens digit) followed by a series of long flashes (the ones digit).
- For example, a code 23 would be displayed as two short flashes followed by three long flashes.
Step 4 - Decode the Codes
- Using the BMW DTC Codes chart, you can decode the flashes and determine what the diagnostic trouble codes are.
- DTC codes are four-digit numbers that correspond to specific problems or malfunctions in your car.
