How do you change the spark plug behind steering linkage on a 1996 Chevy Blazer that is 4 wheel drive witha 4.3 Vortex motor?

1. Disconnect the battery. This will prevent the engine from starting while you are working.

2. Remove the air cleaner housing. This is located on the top of the engine. There are two or three bolts and some hoses going to it.

3. Remove the engine cover. This is also on the top of the engine and is usually secured by a few bolts. On models with a throttle body injection, the air cleaner hosing and cover are one part and are removed together.

4. Detach the coil wire from the spark plug. The wire from the distributor must be traced across the valve covers to disconnect it from the plug wire.

5. Remove the spark plug. If you are using a ratchet, this will be a long process due to limited clearance. Using an extended flexible head ratchet or spark plug socket on a breaker bar will make removal much easier.

- Re-install the spark plug. When it will not turn any further, give the wrench one final 1/16 to 1/8 of a turn to seat the gasket or seal properly. This is known as tightening to crush.

- Reattach the coil wire and make sure it is secure.

6. Reinstall the engine cover. Fasten the cover in place with bolts.

7. Reinstall the air cleaner housing. Reinstall the bolts removed and connect any hoses.

8. Reconnect the battery. You are done!
