1. Preparatory Steps:
- Park your vehicle on a level, stable surface.
- Engage the parking brake.
- Open the hood of your vehicle.
- Disconnect the negative terminal of your vehicle's battery.
2. Remove the Old Belt:
- Locate the alternator belt. It is usually routed around the alternator, crankshaft pulley, and power steering pump.
- Use a wrench or socket to loosen and remove the bolt(s) that tension the alternator belt.
- Remove the old alternator belt from the pulleys.
3. Installing the New Belt:
- Align the new alternator belt around the alternator, crankshaft pulley, and power steering pump.
- Start by putting the belt on the crankshaft pulley.
- Then, wrap the belt around the alternator pulley.
- Finally, route the belt around the power steering pump.
4. Tension the Belt:
- With the belt in place, use a wrench or socket to re-tighten the bolt(s) that tension the alternator belt.
- Make sure the belt has the proper tension. It should be snug but not too tight.
- You can check the belt's tension by pressing down on it. If it deflects about half an inch (1.25 centimeters), it has the correct tension.
5. Connect Battery:
Reconnect the negative terminal of the vehicle's battery that was disconnected earlier.
6. Final Checks:
- Double-check that all bolts are tightened securely.
- Close the hood of your vehicle.
- Test the new belt by turning on the engine and check if the alternator is charging properly.
Note:
- If the belt squeals during operation, it may need to be adjusted or replaced.
- If you are uncomfortable performing any of these steps, it's best to have a qualified mechanic do the work.
