1. Prepare your tools and materials. You will need:
- A new oil filter (check your owner's manual for the correct filter type)
- An oil filter wrench
- A funnel
- Replacement motor oil (check your owner's manual for the correct type and amount)
- Rags or paper towels
- A drain pan
2. Prepare your car. Turn off the engine and allow it to cool down. Engage the parking brake and chock the wheels. If possible, raise the front of the car using ramps or a jack and jack stands.
3. Locate the oil filter. The oil filter is located on the front of the engine, near the top. It is a cylindrical-shaped object with a black cap.
4. Place the drain pan under the oil filter. Make sure the pan is large enough to catch all of the oil that will drain out.
5. Loosen the oil filter cap. Use the oil filter wrench to turn the cap counterclockwise until it is loose.
6. Remove the oil filter cap and filter element. Be careful not to spill any oil. The oil filter element is located inside the cap.
7. Inspect the oil filter element. Look for any signs of damage or wear, such as tears or holes. If you find any damage, replace the oil filter element immediately.
8. Install the new oil filter element. Place the new oil filter element into the cap and screw the cap back onto the oil filter housing. Tighten the cap until it is snug.
9. Add new motor oil. Use the funnel to add new motor oil to the engine. Add the amount of oil specified in your owner's manual.
10. Check the oil level. Use the dipstick to check the oil level. The oil level should be between the "full" and "add" marks on the dipstick.
11. Start the engine and let it run for a few minutes. This will circulate the new oil throughout the engine.
12. Check for leaks. Look under the car for any signs of oil leaks. If you find any leaks, tighten the oil filter cap or drain plug until the leak stops.
13. Dispose of the old oil and filter properly. Take the old oil and filter to a recycling center or dispose of them according to your local regulations.
