- Socket set (including a 10 mm, 13 mm, 17 mm, 19 mm deep socket)
- Hex key set
- Flathead screwdriver
- Extension wrench
Instructions
Remove the oil filter cover, this can be accessed from the bottom of the car just below the oil filter. To do this, place the 17mm socket on the bolt and turn it slowly until it starts to loosen, use the extension wrench if necessary.
Remove the upper camshaft cover. Use a small hex key (3 mm should work). There are 6 bolts total, 3 on each side of the cylinder head, and then carefully lift it off. Set aside.
Use a flat head screwdriver to remove the 3 covers on the top of the cylinder head; they pull up and off. This will expose the intake manifold.
Disconnect all of the vacuum lines attached to the intake manifold. These vacuum hoses are typically black and usually have a white marking on them. If the hoses do not come off easily, you can use flat-headed pliers to help. After all of the hoses are disconnected, remove the intake manifold using a 10 mm wrench and 13 mm wrench
Next, remove the exhaust manifold. First remove the 3 large bolts from top of the exhaust manifold to cylinder head using the 19 mm socket. Use the 13 mm wrench to remove the nuts for the exhaust pipe which is behind the header (2 nuts) and to the side of the exhaust manifold (1 nut). These can be difficult to reach so try various angle or extensions depending on the wrench you have. Finally, remove the bolt which holds the exhaust pipe to the exhaust manifold using the 17 mm wrench and extension. Carefully remove the exhaust manifold. Be aware of the gasket between the exhaust manifold and cylinder head. Make sure to take special care not to drop the exhaust manifold onto any wires.
You will now see the cylinder head. If you don't, remove the valve cover from the top of the cylinder head using a 10mm socket. Use the 17 mm wrench to remove the spark plug wires. Use a 19 mm socket to loosen the cylinder head bolts. There are 10 in total. Do this slightly for each bolt. You will most likely need to apply some force while doing this. It is imperative when unbolting the cylinder head to do it a little at a time for each bolt. After all the bolts are free take the cylinder head off carefully lifting it straight up (the cylinder head gasket will most likely stick). Clean off both sides of the cylinder head gasket surface (cylinder head and block). Place the new gasket on the block. Carefully set the cylinder head onto the block while being sure not to move the gasket. Screw in all the bolts by hand and the tighten with the 19 mm wrench. You will again need to apply some force in order to tighten the head so be careful. Reinstall all of the parts in the reverse order of removal.
