- Allen wrench
- 5mm hex key
- Flat head screwdriver
- 10mm socket
- 15mm socket
- 19mm socket
- 30mm socket
- Breaker bar
- Torque wrench
- 1/4-inch drive ratchet
- 1/2-inch drive ratchet
Parts Needed:
- New timing belt
- New water pump
- Timing belt tensioner
- Timing belt idler pulley
- Thermostat (optional)
- Fan belt
- Antifreeze/coolant
Instructions:
1. Disconnect the negative battery terminal.
2. Drain the coolant from the engine.
3. Remove the serpentine belt.
4. Remove the upper timing belt cover.
5. Remove the crankshaft pulley bolt.
6. Use a pry bar to pry the crankshaft pulley off of the engine.
7. Remove the timing belt tensioner.
8. Remove the timing belt idler pulley.
9. Remove the old timing belt.
10. Install the new timing belt.
11. Install the new timing belt tensioner.
12. Install the new timing belt idler pulley.
13. Install the upper timing belt cover.
14. Install the crankshaft pulley bolt.
15. Torque the crankshaft pulley bolt to 125 ft-lb.
16. Install the serpentine belt.
17. Fill the engine with coolant.
18. Install the battery ground terminal.
Here are some additional tips for changing the timing belt on a 2000 Volvo S70:
- Make sure that the engine is cold before you begin working on it.
- Be careful not to damage the crankshaft pulley when you are prying it off of the engine.
- Take your time and make sure that you do not make any mistakes.
- If you are not comfortable with doing this repair yourself, you can take your car to a qualified mechanic.
