What causes an SUV to sit low when parked?

An SUV sitting low when parked can be caused by several things, most commonly related to suspension or load:

* Heavy Load: The most obvious reason is simply that the SUV is carrying a significant amount of weight – passengers, cargo, or even a full tank of fuel. The weight compresses the suspension springs, causing the vehicle to sit lower than normal.

* Sagging Suspension: Over time, the suspension components (springs, shocks/struts) can wear out or weaken. Worn-out springs lose their ability to support the vehicle's weight effectively, leading to a lower ride height. Similarly, leaking shocks or struts will reduce their damping effect, allowing the vehicle to sag.

* Air Suspension Leak (if equipped): Some SUVs have air suspension systems. A leak in the air lines or air springs will cause the vehicle to sit lower than intended.

* Broken or Damaged Spring(s): A broken or severely damaged spring will dramatically reduce the vehicle's ride height on that particular axle.

* Improperly Installed Lift Kit (if applicable): If the SUV has a lift kit installed, incorrect installation can lead to uneven settling and a lower than expected ride height.

* Vehicle Age and Wear: The overall wear and tear on the vehicle's suspension can contribute to a lower sitting position over time.

To diagnose the specific cause, it's best to have a mechanic inspect the SUV's suspension system. They can identify any worn or damaged components and recommend necessary repairs.
