When were cars invinted?

There's no single date for the invention of the car, as it was a gradual process of development. However, Karl Benz is generally credited with inventing the first practical automobile in 1886. He patented his Benz Patent-Motorwagen. Other inventors were working on similar vehicles around the same time, but Benz's is considered the first to be truly commercially viable.
