For Split-Folding Rear Seats:
1. Locate the release levers: These are usually located in the trunk area, just behind the rear seats. There will be one or two levers, one for each section of the split seat. They might be hidden behind a trim panel. You may have to feel around. Look for levers or pull straps.
2. Pull the release levers: Pull the levers firmly and listen for a "click" or feel the seat back begin to move. If they're difficult, make sure you've got a good grip and pull decisively, but avoid excessive force which could damage them.
3. Fold the seatbacks down: Once released, the seatbacks should fold forward and down relatively easily. They may latch into place.
For a Solid Bench Seat (less common):
This is less likely but possible. If you have a solid bench seat, there's a chance there's no fold-down mechanism. You might have to remove the seat completely, which is significantly more involved and generally not recommended unless necessary.
If you can't find the levers:
* Check your owner's manual: This is the best resource. It will have diagrams and instructions specific to your vehicle's model.
* Search online: Look for "1999 VW Cabrio rear seat fold down" or "1999 VW Golf Cabrio rear seat release" along with images. Seeing pictures can greatly help locate the levers.
* Consult a Volkswagen mechanic or parts specialist: They will have a thorough understanding of the model and can easily guide you.
Remember to be gentle but firm when manipulating the levers. If you force anything, you risk breaking the mechanism.
