1. Locate the release levers: These are usually found on either side of the rear seat, either at the top of the seatback itself, or sometimes tucked away in the trunk, near where the seatbacks meet the rear panel. They might be pull straps, levers, or buttons.
2. Pull the levers: Pull the levers to release the seatbacks. You may need to pull firmly. Some models require a push-button on the end, or a combination of pull-straps and release levers.
3. Fold the seatbacks down: Once released, the seatbacks should fold down relatively easily. They usually fold forward.
If you can't find the levers:
* Check your owner's manual: This is the best resource for specific instructions for your vehicle. It will show you exactly where the release levers are located.
* Look closely around the rear seat: Examine the area around the base of the seatbacks, both inside the vehicle and inside the trunk area. The levers can be surprisingly well-hidden.
* Search online: Search on YouTube or Google for "2001 Chevy Malibu rear seat fold down" – videos often show this process clearly.
If you've tried all this and still can't find the levers, there may be a problem with the mechanism. A mechanic might be able to help.
