How do you remove the dashboard on a 1971 Chevelle Malibu?

1. Disconnect the battery. This is always the first step when working on any electrical system.

2. Remove the steering wheel. There are two nuts that hold the steering wheel in place. To loosen them, you will need a socket wrench with a 7/16" socket. Once the nuts are loose, you can pull the steering wheel off of the steering column.

3. Remove the instrument cluster. There are four screws that hold the instrument cluster in place. To access these screws, you will need to pry off the trim that surrounds the cluster. The screws are located at the top and bottom of the cluster. Once the screws are removed, you can pull the cluster out of the dash.

4. Remove the heater controls. There are four screws that hold the heater controls in place. To access these screws, you will need to pry off the trim that surrounds the controls. The screws are located at the top and bottom of the controls. Once the screws are removed, you can pull the controls out of the dash.

5. Remove the glove box. To remove the glove box, you will need to first remove the two knobs that hold the door closed. Next, you will need to pry off the trim that surrounds the glove box. There are two screws located at the top of the glove box that you will need to remove. Once the screws are removed, you can pull the glove box out of the dash.

6. Remove the center console. To remove the center console, you will need to first remove the ashtray. The ashtray is held in place by two screws. Next, you will need to pry off the trim that surrounds the center console. There are four screws located at the base of the console that you will need to remove. Once the screws are removed, you can lift the console up and out of the dash.

7. Remove the dash pad. The dash pad is held in place by several screws. To access these screws, you will need to use a screwdriver to pry off the trim that surrounds the dash pad. Once the screws are removed, you can pull the dash pad off of the dash.

8. Unbolt the dashboard. Disconnect the wiring from the back of the dashboard. It might be advisable to label wiring in this step so reinstalling your dashboard becomes an easier process. Next, you will need to unbolt the dashboard. The dashboard is bolted in place at the top and bottom with two bolts on each side. Unbolt it and lift gently so that the dashboard clears the wiring at the bottom.
