The first condition is that the car you are trading in must be registered in the same state as the car you are buying. If you are trading in a car that is registered in a different state, you will need to transfer the registration to the new state before you can transfer the plates.
The second condition is that the plates must be in good condition. If the plates are damaged or illegible, you will not be able to transfer them.
The third condition is that you must have the following documents:
- The original title to the car you are trading in
- The registration for the car you are trading in
- Proof of insurance for the car you are trading in
- A valid driver's license
- A bill of sale for the car you are buying
- The title for the car you are buying
- The registration for the car you are buying
- Proof of insurance for the car you are buying
Once you have all of the required documents, you can go to the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) and fill out an application to transfer your old plates. There will be a fee for this service.
Once the DMV has processed your application, you can take your old plates off of the car you are trading in and put them on the car you are buying. You must display the new registration sticker on the car.
