How do you find out who is the leinholder for a car?

1. Visit the National Automobile Title Information System website and enter your VIN number to get a lienholder report. Your VIN is located on a sticker inside your car door.

2. Contact your local Department of Motor Vehicles and provide them with your car’s make and model. They can give you the name and contact information for the lienholder.

3. Check your car’s title certificate. The lienholder’s name and contact information will be listed on the title.

4. Contact your lender and ask them who the lienholder is.

5. Look for a lien release letter from the previous owner. This letter will indicate who the lienholder is and will provide instructions on how to pay off the lien.
