Method 1 -Using the Check Engine Light:
1. Turn the key to the "On" position without starting the engine (II in most models).
2. Leave the key in the "On" position for approximately 5 seconds, then turn it to the "Off" position.
3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 two more times.
4. On the third time of turning the key to "Off," leave it there.
5. The "Service Engine Soon" or "Check Engine" light will begin to flash.
6. Count the number of times the light flashes, then pauses.
7. Each flash represents a number; for example, two flashes, a pause, and then three flashes translates to code 23 and so on.
8. Write down the codes as you observe them.
Method 2 - Using a Scan Tool:
1. Connect a scan tool to the vehicle's diagnostic port. This port is usually located under the dashboard, near the steering column.
2. Turn the key to the "On" position without starting the engine.
3. Follow the prompts on the scan tool to retrieve the DTCs.
4. Write down the codes as they are displayed on the scan tool.
Once you have retrieved the DTCs, you can look them up in a diagnostic trouble code book or online to find out what they mean and how to fix the problem.
