1. Place a piece of masking tape on the right and left cam covers.
2. Using white paint or a white grease marker, make a mark on the cam gears as shown.
3. Rotate the crankshaft, using the vibration damper scale and its notch, to TDC of compression for cylinder #1.
4. Align and mark the top surfaces of the cam gear as shown.
Crankshaft
The vibration damper scale is marked in degrees clockwise from 0° to 30°. The notch in the vibration damper is used to align the marks on the scale.
The engine is at TDC of compression for cylinder #1 when the following marks are aligned:
- The #1 piston at TDC
- The cam gears timing marks are aligned with their marks on the cam cover
- The vibration damper scale notch and its 0° mark are aligned with the timing mark on the oil pump (or engine block).
