Required Tools and Materials
- Spark plugs (4)
- Spark plug wrench
- 5/8-inch socket
- Ratchet
- Extension
- Gapping tool
Instructions:
1. Remove the Engine Cover:
- Open the hood of the car.
- Locate the engine cover, which is usually made of black plastic.
- There may be clips or bolts securing it in place. Remove them to take off the engine cover.
2. Locate the Spark Plugs:
- The spark plugs are located on the top of the engine, near the front of the vehicle.
- There are four spark plugs in total, one for each cylinder.
3. Disconnect the Ignition Coils:
- The spark plugs are connected to the ignition coils by wires.
- To disconnect an ignition coil, press down on the plastic connector and pull it straight up.
4. Remove the Old Spark Plugs:
- Using a spark plug wrench, turn the old spark plug counterclockwise until it comes out.
- Be careful not to drop the spark plug into the engine.
5. Gap the New Spark Plugs:
- Check the gap between the center electrode and the ground electrode of the new spark plug using a gapping tool.
- The gap should be between 0.039 and 0.043 inches (1.0 to 1.1 mm).
- If necessary, carefully bend the ground electrode to adjust the gap.
6. Install the New Spark Plugs:
- Screw in the new spark plug by hand until it is snug.
- Then, use the spark plug wrench to tighten it an additional 1/2 turn.
- Be careful not to overtighten the spark plug, as this could damage the threads.
7. Reconnect the Ignition Coils:
- Press the ignition coil connector back onto the spark plug.
- Make sure it is securely connected.
8. Replace the Engine Cover:
- Put the engine cover back in place and secure it with the clips or bolts you removed earlier.
Additional Notes:
- It is recommended to replace spark plugs every 30,000 to 50,000 miles (48,000 to 80,000 km) or according to the manufacturer's maintenance schedule.
- Replacing spark plugs is a relatively simple task, but it can be tricky to reach the spark plugs on some vehicles.
- If you are not comfortable working on your vehicle, it is best to have a mechanic replace the spark plugs.
These are the steps to remove the old and install the new spark plugs. Before continuing, allow the car to cool if the engines were working.
