Materials Needed
- 10mm socket
- Socket wrench
- Pliers
- Flashlight
Step 1: Locate the thermostat housing.
The thermostat housing contains the coolant temperature sensor. It is located on the front of the engine, just below the upper radiator hose.
Step 2: Disconnect the electrical connector to the sensor.
You will see two sensors, one located at the top of the thermostat housing and one located at the bottom of the thermostat housing. Disconnect the electrical connector to the sensor located at the bottom of the thermostat housing.
Part 2 of 3: Remove the old coolant temperature sensor
Step 1: Remove the old sensor using the 10mm socket.
Use a 10mm socket and unscrew the old sensor. Be careful not to drop the old sensor into the engine bay.
Step 2: Clean the sensor area.
Use a rag and some degreaser cleaner to clean the area where the old sensor was located.
Part 3 of 3: Install the new coolant temperature sensor
Step 1: Install the new coolant temperature sensor.
Replace the old O ring on the new sensor (not all new sensors come with an O ring so its always a good idea to just order one for peace of mind), lubricate the new O ring lightly with grease and screw the new sensor into the thermostat housing. Tighten the sensor until it is snug.
Step 2: Reconnect the electrical connector.
Reconnect the electrical connector to the coolant temperature sensor.
Step 3: Test the new coolant temperature sensor.
Start the engine and let it run for a few minutes. Check the temperature gauge to ensure the sensor is working properly.
