What is the purpose of screw in Honda 750 4 k1 final drive sprocket end shaft?

There is no screw that goes into the end shaft for the rear sprocket assembly 0n a 1970 or prior 750 k1. If a screw has been tapped in there in that location, it is not stock or correct.
