Remove the transmission cover.
Locate the shifter pawl. It is a small, triangular-shaped piece of metal that is located on the inside of the transmission cover.
Loosen the lock nut on the shifter pawl.
Use a flat-head screwdriver to turn the shifter pawl clockwise. This will move the pawl closer to the transmission shaft.
Tighten the lock nut.
Reinstall the transmission cover.
Test the shifter pawl by shifting the transmission through all of the gears. The shifter should now engage smoothly and quietly.
If you are still having problems with the shifter pawl, you may need to replace it.
