There are usually two belts on a riding lawn mower: one that drives the blades, and one that drives the transmission. The blade belt is usually shorter and wider than the transmission belt.
2. Locate the belt tensioner.
The belt tensioner is usually a long, metal rod with a spring-loaded pulley at one end. It is located near the drive pulley for the belt that came off.
3. Loosen the belt tensioner.
Use a wrench to loosen the bolt or nut that holds the belt tensioner in place. This will allow you to move the tensioner and release the tension on the belt.
4. Remove the belt.
Slide the belt off of the pulleys.
5. Check the belt for damage.
Inspect the belt for any signs of damage, such as cracks, tears, or fraying. If the belt is damaged, it will need to be replaced.
6. Install the new belt.
Slide the new belt onto the pulleys. Make sure that the belt is routed correctly around the pulleys.
7. Tighten the belt tensioner.
Tighten the bolt or nut that holds the belt tensioner in place until the belt is snug.
8. Start the lawn mower.
Test the lawn mower to make sure that the belt is working properly.
