Note: Always disconnect the battery before working on any electrical components.
1. Gather the necessary tools.
- Phillips screwdriver
- Flathead screwdriver
- 5/8-inch wrench
- 7/8-inch wrench
- 3/4-inch wrench
- T25 Torx driver
- T30 Torx driver
- New ignition switch and keys
2. Remove the fuel tank.
- Turn the fuel valve to the "off" position.
- Disconnect the fuel line (using the 5/8-inch wrench) and drain the fuel into a suitable container.
- Remove the two bolts on the rear of the fuel tank using a 7/8-inch wrench.
- Disconnect the electrical connections and lift the fuel tank off the motorcycle.
3. Remove the front fairing.
- This step may vary slightly depending on the specific model of your Road King.
- In most cases, you will need to remove all or part of the front fairing to access the ignition switch.
- Refer to your motorcycle's service manual for detailed instructions on removing the front fairing.
4. Remove the old ignition switch.
- Locate the ignition switch on the right side of the motorcycle, just below the handlebars.
- Use the T25 Torx driver to remove the two screws holding the ignition switch in place.
- Disconnect the electrical connectors from the back of the ignition switch.
- Pull the ignition switch out of the housing.
5. Install the new ignition switch.
- Insert the new ignition switch into the housing.
- Connect the electrical connectors to the back of the switch.
- Secure the ignition switch with the two screws using the T25 Torx driver.
6. Test the new ignition switch.
- Turn the ignition switch on and off several times to ensure it is functioning properly.
- Insert the key and turn it to the "on" position to check if the motorcycle's electrical components receive power.
7. Reinstall the front fairing and fuel tank.
- Follow the reverse procedure to reinstall the front fairing and fuel tank.
- Make sure all the electrical connections are secure and that all bolts and screws are tightened properly.
8. Reconnect the battery.
- Reconnect the negative battery terminal first, followed by the positive battery terminal.
9. Test the motorcycle.
- Start the motorcycle and check if everything is functioning normally, including the ignition, headlights, taillights, and turn signals.
