To change the transmission fluid on a 1999 Honda Fourtrax:

Assemble the necessary tools and parts.

- 8mm Allen key

- Clean rag

- Funnel

- New transmission fluid (SAE 10W-40)

- Catch pan

Safety Precautions:

- Make sure the machine is on a level surface, the engine is off and has been given enough time to cool down.

- Park the ATV on its center stand.

- Wear safety glasses to protect your eyes.

Procedure

1. Locate the transmission drain plug.

- It is located on the bottom of the transmission on the right-hand side of the ATV.

- The drain plug has an 8 mm Allen key bolt head.

2. Place the catch pan under the transmission drain plug.

3. Remove the drain plug.

- Using the 8mm Allen key, turn the drain plug counterclockwise to remove it.

- Allow all of the old fluid to drain completely.

4. Replace the drain plug.

- Once all of the old fluid has drained out, reinstall the drain plug and tighten it securely.

- Be careful not to over-tighten the drain plug.

5. Locate the transmission fill plug.

- It is located on the top of the transmission, also on the right-hand side of the ATV.

- The fill plug is a 10 mm bolt head.

6. Remove the fill plug.

- Use a 10mm wrench or socket to turn the fill plug counterclockwise to remove it.

7. Using the funnel, add the proper amount of transmission fluid.

- It is recommended to use SAE 10W-40 motorcycle transmission fluid.

8. Install the fill plug and tighten securely.

- Be careful not to over-tighten the fill plug.

9. Run the engine for a few minutes to circulate the new transmission fluid.

- Then recheck the transmission fluid level. If necessary, add additional fluid to bring it to the proper level.

Tips:

- It is recommended to change the transmission fluid every 12 months or every 100 hours of operation, whichever comes first.

- If the ATV has been used in deep water or mud, it is recommended to change the transmission fluid immediately.

- It is also a good idea to inspect the transmission fluid regularly for any signs of contamination, such as metal shavings or water droplets. If you notice any contamination, change the transmission fluid immediately.
