My cigarette lighter on a 2000 Ford Ranger no longer works Purchased replacement at Wal-Mart. However I get the assembly out of dashboard. Anyone know easy way doing this.?

Replacing a cigarette lighter in a 2000 Ford Ranger isn't overly difficult, but accessing it can be tricky. There's no single "easy" way, as it varies slightly depending on the specific trim level of your Ranger. However, these steps should generally apply:

1. Preparation:

* Disconnect the Battery: This is crucial to prevent short circuits. Disconnect the negative (-) terminal first.

* Gather Tools: You'll likely need a small flathead screwdriver, possibly a trim pry tool (plastic is best to avoid scratching), and possibly a Phillips head screwdriver.

2. Removing the Bezel (the plastic surrounding the lighter):

This is the hardest part. There are usually clips holding the bezel in place.

* Look for seams: Carefully examine the area around the cigarette lighter. There are likely small gaps or seams where the bezel meets the dashboard.

* Insert the tool: Gently insert your flathead screwdriver or trim tool into these seams. Work your way around the perimeter, carefully prying the bezel away from the dashboard. Be very gentle; these clips are often brittle and can break easily. Use the tool to carefully release the clips one by one, working slowly and methodically.

* Release the bezel: Once all the clips are released, the bezel should come out. You may need to gently wiggle it.

3. Removing the Cigarette Lighter:

Once the bezel is removed, you should see the cigarette lighter itself. It's usually held in place by a single nut or retaining clip on the back.

* Identify the fastener: Look closely at the back of the lighter assembly.

* Remove the fastener: Use the appropriate screwdriver (likely a Phillips head) to remove the nut or carefully release the clip.

* Pull out the lighter: Once the fastener is removed, gently pull the cigarette lighter out of the dashboard.

4. Installation:

* Connect the new lighter: Plug in the new cigarette lighter.

* Secure the lighter: Reattach the nut or clip to secure the new lighter in place.

* Reinstall the bezel: Carefully align the bezel and snap it back into place. Make sure all clips are properly seated.

5. Reconnect the Battery:

Reconnect the battery's negative (-) terminal.

Important Considerations:

* Take pictures: Before you start, take pictures of how everything is connected. This will be incredibly helpful during reassembly.

* Patience: This process requires patience and a gentle touch. Don't force anything.

* Wiring: If the new lighter doesn't work, double-check the wiring connections. A faulty connection is a more common problem than a faulty lighter itself.

* Online Resources: Search YouTube for "2000 Ford Ranger cigarette lighter replacement" – videos can be incredibly helpful in visualizing the process. Be sure to select videos specific to your year and model.

If you are uncomfortable with this process, it's best to take your Ranger to a qualified mechanic. Damaged clips or incorrectly reconnected wiring can lead to further problems.
