While you don't *need* a special tool, having a
trim removal tool or a similar plastic pry tool is highly recommended for removing the door panel on a 1999 Oldsmobile Alero (and most other cars). These tools help prevent scratching or damaging the panel and the clips that hold it in place.
You can probably do it with a flathead screwdriver, but you risk marring the plastic. The trim tool's wider, flatter, and usually gentler design makes it much safer for the panel.
In short: Not strictly necessary, but strongly advised to prevent damage.
