Who in vented the auto?

There's no single inventor of the automobile. Many people contributed to its development over time. However, Karl Benz is often credited with inventing the first practical automobile, patented in 1886. His creation was a three-wheeled vehicle powered by an internal combustion engine. While others were working on similar vehicles, Benz's is generally considered the first to be truly commercially viable.
