The exact method depends slightly on whether you have the manual or automatic locking hubs:
If you have AUTOMATIC locking hubs:
1. Shift the transfer case lever to 2WD (or 2H - 2 High). This lever is usually located on the floor console, near the shifter. Look for markings indicating "2H," "4H," and possibly "4L" (4 Low). Shift it to the 2H position.
2. That's it. The automatic hubs will disengage automatically when the transfer case is in 2WD. You don't need to manually engage or disengage them.
If you have MANUAL locking hubs:
1. Shift the transfer case lever to 2WD (or 2H - 2 High). Same as above.
2. Unlock the front hubs. These are located on the front wheel axles. There will be a knob or lever on each hub. Turn the hub to unlock (usually counter-clockwise) until it's free and you feel or hear a click. This disconnects the front wheels from the drivetrain. You'll typically find a diagram near the hubs showing the locked and unlocked positions.
Important Considerations:
* Do not shift the transfer case into 4WD or 4 Low while driving at high speeds on dry pavement. This can cause serious drivetrain damage.
* Always disengage 4WD before driving on dry pavement for any significant distance.
* Consult your owner's manual. It's the best source of information specific to your Bronco II's 4WD system. The location of levers and proper procedures will be clearly detailed there.
If you're unsure about any part of this process, it's best to consult a mechanic familiar with older Ford Bronco IIs.
